Near

"Nobody can tell what is right and what is wrong, what is righteous and what is evil. Even if there is a god, and I had His teachings before me, I would think it through, and decide if that was right or wrong myself."

Near was my first and perhaps my oldest experience with yumejoshi. I remember back at age 13 thinking he distinctly reminded of my best friend at the time (who is now my boyfriend, go figure) and instantly falling in love. I couldn't understand why he was popularly hated in fandom at the time - I even held a strong dislike for Mello due to him being often shipped with Near, because I was jealous! many years later I actually love meronia now, but Near remains my first yume love of many years ♡

Near, real name Nate River, one of the two successors to L, is one of the main characters of the second arc of Death Note. said arc is very clumsily written and really not the best part of the series, but in spite of that I've always dearly loved Near as a character.

he's generally very serious, but by far is not unexpressive - he's shown to have a dry sense of humor, a mischievous streak, and be opinionated about the roles of the people surrounding him. he collects toys of many kinds, which are shown to be an outlet of expression for him, often through building intricate towers - he even made his own fingers puppets of the people around him, of which the writer notes he put more effort into the ones of people he likes. he even collects gunpla from existing anime, which suggests he's also a big nerd! he holds respect for the people he works with equals, and while he is furiously against kira, he is shown to be very forgiving of the wrongs of people he likes in his life. he solely wears the same pair of pajamas and is said to have struggles completing daily life tasks on his own, and needs help to do things on his own. the creators have said that near doesn't interact with others a lot because he's sensitive, something I think is sweet and also incredibly sad.

for the short amount of time he's in the manga and in one shots released later, Near displays so many fun sides and traits that made me fall in love with him so quickly. I always hated the fandom depiction of him as a "discount L," because even if the manga was written lazily during his part, Near was very well written to be unique from L in so lany ways. he is often headcanoned as trans by people who love him due to him having just the right amount of genderweird androgyny, and as autistic due to the wide amount of behaviors he has that many autistic people to relate to. the near in my yume writings and art is transfem and autistic, something that gives me a lot of joy ♡

Near will always be my first love and my favorite Death Note character, someone whose love I cherish and who got me through some very hard times in the past. thank you for always being yourself, Near, and for being with me 10 years strong ♡
